Serious Violence Strategy

The Serious Violence Duty was introduced in the Police Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and puts a duty on specified authorities to build a public health approach to understanding the drivers and impacts of serious violence, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.

In Cheshire, the specified authorities for the purpose of the Serious Violence Duty are:

  • Cheshire Constabulary
  • Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Cheshire and Merseyside ICB
  • Probation Service
  • Youth Justice Service
  • Halton Borough Council
  • Warrington Borough Council
  • Cheshire West and Chester Council
  • Cheshire East Council

Preventing serious violence is not something that any single agency can tackle in isolation.

In response to the Serious Violence Duty, the OPCC hosts 2 positions, one seconded from Probation and one from Cheshire Constabulary, providing specialist support and experience to the wider partnership in relation to serious violence in Cheshire.

The role profile for the Inspector from Cheshire Constabulary is available here.

Their roles are to drive forward the response and strategic planning of reducing Serious Violence in the county of Cheshire, ensuring they develop and implement strategies that underpin the overall strategic plan that ensures the management and assessment of threat, risk, and harm.

Serious Violence Strategy

The Serious Violence Strategy for Cheshire will cover a five-year period, with annual reviews to reflect on progress against planned outcomes and to update delivery plans against emerging trends.

More information is available in the Serious Violence Strategy document.
